  Description of Seminar/Conference

The Seminar will cover the following topics:

Solving Common Behavior Problems to Prevent Surrenders
Behavior problems are the most common reasons for relinquishment of companion animals. Some of the behaviors that humans don’t like in their dogs and cats are normal behaviors for the animals. However, the average pet owner doesn’t care if it’s ‘normal’, they just want it to stop. Frustration over the behavior and a lack of knowledge on how to resolve the problem can lead to a breakdown in the human-animal bond, which in turn can lead to relinquishment. Knowing what kinds of advice to give troubled owners can often help to keep the pet in the home.

This presentation includes a discussion on the most common behavior problems reported in dogs and cats and provides information on how to manage, modify, or resolve these issues.

The Importance of Getting a Good History – Surrender Profiles
Shelters and Rescues that take in owner relinquishments have a chance to get a great deal of information about the surrendered animal that can help staff make decisions and adopters be more successful. Find out what questions to ask and how to ask them in order to get the most honest and useful answers.

Canine Behavior Evaluations – How and Why
A well designed and executed behavior evaluation gives the shelter staff a lot of information regarding the dog’s basic personality and temperament traits and it’s threshold level for aggression in certain situations. The information gleaned from an evaluation can then be used to make sound disposition decisions about the dogs.

This presentation includes an in depth discussion and demonstration of how to perform the canine behavior evaluation (using video and live demos).

The presentation will also include a discussion of Ms. Bollen’s research on the validity and reliability of this evaluation procedure, which has been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal (Bollen, K.S. and Horowitz, J. Behavioral Evaluation and Demographic Information in the Assessment of Aggressiveness in Shelter Dogs. Applied Animal Behaviour Science, Vol. 112, pp. 120-135, 2008)
