  Description of Seminar/Conference

This workshop will address different ways to deal with the "special" students, both canine and human, who keep our jobs interesting and
challenging -- and turn our hair gray.

This will be an open discussion and the participants will be part of the instruction. We will be using role-play, and sharing stories to develop skills and strategies for dealing with unexpected, but not-too unusual situations.

DEVILS, VAMPIRES AND MONSTERS -

  • Dr. Jekyll - Owner who knows more than you (at least s/he thinks so)
  • Mr. Hyde - Intoxicated owner
  • The Werewolf - Owner who hits or is abusive to his dog
  • The Ghost - Owner who is not home when you show up for a lesson
  • Time-Vampire - Owner who asks questions constantly or just does not follow direction

DEVIL - DOGS

  • The aggressive dog who comes to class for socialization
  • The dog that bites another dog or person in class
  • The dog that bites his owner
  • The dog that gets loose in class

FULL MOONS

  • The entire class has fallen asleep or is suffering from amnesia
  • You show up for a lesson and the dog is in the yard off-leash
  • Couple who use dog's behavior problem to avoid dealing with their
    marriage problems
  • Parents who expect a child to be wholly responsible for everything involving the dog
  • Owner denial about aggression and their responsibility to keep kids & neighbors safe

EXCORCISM

  • Don't make excuses
  • Expect the unexpected
  • Set the rules and stick to 'em
  • Know your expertise and be confident

This will be an interactive session, where attendees can add to the suggested solutions and share their own anecdotes. Participants are
encouraged to bring their own photos, videos (on a camera or with a player) or props. Trainers will take away easy solutions for common situations, and probably some not-so-common ones as well. This promises to be a fun stress-reliever with lots of stories we can all relate to, and hopefully laugh at.
