  Description of Seminar/Conference

Service dogs assist their physically disabled partners by performing various tasks including picking up dropped items, opening/closing doors and getting help in an emergency.

Hearing dogs alert their hearing impaired partners to sounds including door knocks, telephone rings and crying babies.

Click for Independence I combines lecture, training sessions and video
to give attendees a comprehensive overview of the service and hearing dog training process.

Working dogs will be introduced to three foundation service dog behaviors- tug, push and retrieve.

Hearing dog behaviors will be covered through video and demonstration.

The schedule includes:

Day 1:
• Service Dog Behaviors- what a SD learns and how to teach it
• Hearing Dog Behaviors- what a HD learns and how to teach it
• Public Access Laws
Day 2:
• Obedience for Service and Hearing Dogs- training for public access
• Foster Training
• Client Screening
• Customizing the Dog for a Client
• Team Training
• Evaluation of Service and Hearing Dogs
Day 3- at the shelter:
• Temperament Tests- learn to screen shelter dogs for potential hearing and service dogs- lots of demonstration!
